Chapter 11

Uberto sauntered over and, in heavily accented in English, said, “You still have the touch, Mason. The cat is a work of art.”

“Hey, all the credit goes to you, my friend.” Quint shook Uberto’s hand. “You taught me everything you know.”

“The student becomes the master.” Uberto’s grin was generous.

“Not hardly.” Quint rubbed the bridge of his nose with an index finger. “But thanks for stroking my ego.”

“Is your lady ready for her lesson?” Uberto looked over at Jorgie.

“Oh, I’m not his lady.” Jorgie took a step away from Quint.

Uberto laughed and said something to Quint in Italian that Jorgie didn’t catch.

“What did he say?” she asked Quint.

“He says you can’t fool him. He sees the way your eyes light up when you look at me.”

Jorgie punched Quint lightly on the forearm. “He did not.”

Quint threw back his head and laughed. “Can’t pull one over on you, Ms. Gerard. He said my eyes light up whenever I look at you.”

“Really?” Her pulse tripped over itself.

Uberto motioned them toward the first furnace.

“Come on,” Quint said. “You’re going to make a vase.”

“Wh-what? Um... I...” Jorgie cleared her throat. Now that the time had come, she wasn’t so sure about this. The furnaces were hot, and glassblowing looked tricky.

“You can’t chicken out now.” Quint put an encouraging hand on her shoulder. “I’m here. I’ve got your back.”

She took a deep breath. Jorgie didn’t know what unnerved her more, the idea of blowing glass or Quint.

“It’ll be fun. I’ll help you.”

That’s exactly what she was afraid of. His proximity.

“Am I backing you into a corner?” He dropped his smile. “Seriously, no pressure. If you don’t want to do it, no worries. I just thought it would be fun.”

“Of course, I want to do it,” she said. “I do appreciate the push out of my comfort zone. Sometimes I’m a little reluctant to plunge right in.”

“Do know if you change your mind, it’s perfectly okay. The point is to have fun and if it stresses you out, that’s no fun at all.”

“Let’s do this,” she said, more eager now that he had given her the option to quit.

“First, we need to get you Kevlar gloves.”

“But you didn’t use gloves.”

“You’re a beginner. Trust me, you’ll want them.”

Uberto produced the fire retardant gloves and Jorgie slipped them on.

“Pick a cold blowpipe,” Quint said and gestured toward the blowpipes arranged on a nearby metal table.

Jorgie picked up a long narrow iron tube about an inch and a half in diameter.

“Now,” he said, “we go to the gathering tank.”

He guided her across the room. Jorgie circled the gathering tank, feeling waves of intense, radiating heat wash over her.

“Here, let me help you.” He came up behind her to show her. “Hold the rod like this.”

His breath was warm against her nape as he repositioned her fingers on the cool metal rod. He wrapped his hand around her wrist and directed her forward with his leg. “Keep your knees bent.”

She copied his position.

“Now, step up and set the pipe on the edge of the tank.
